Circumcision

by Michael Serna on Nov.29, 2011, under Devotion

Circumcision is the “surgical removal of the foreskin of the male sex organ. This action served as a sign of God’s Covenant relation with His people. It signified their responsibility to serve as the holy people whom God had called as His special servants in the midst of a pagan world. Circumcision … became a badge of the Jews spiritual and national superiority, fostering a spirit of exclusivism … Gentiles came to be regarded by the Jews as the ‘uncircumcision,’ a term of disrespect implying that the non-Jewish people were outside the circle of God’s love.

Evangelism Today

by Michael Serna on Nov.16, 2011, under Devotion

One pastor wrote a book questioning the biblical teaching on hell. Another pastor recently said that he thinks we should no longer use the terminology “saved” or “born again” in our preaching because our culture doesn’t understand that. And a popular Christian blogger has questioned the whole idea of evangelism.

There has never been a time when it is more significant for us to warn people about the reality of hell and tell them they need to be saved and born again. And yes, we need to do it through evangelism.

True Discipleship

by Michael Serna on Nov.06, 2011, under Devotion

The full concept of discipleship is to:

Share your faith
Lead people to Christ
Then help them mature

Are you doing that today? If not, The question is, are you a disciple? Perhaps you have done one or two of the things listed above, but not all. Maybe you haven’t done any of them. If you are ready to stop being a fair-weather follower, a spiritual baby, then why not take the opportunity to commit yourself to being a true disciple of Christ?

Speaking of spiritual babies, I can’t begin to wonder how much spiritual babies we have in this church. And I don’t mean to inquire about Chreselle or Matrix, their babies on their own … But what gets to me is that how many people in this room would like to spoon-fed the word, and not feed themselves.

1 And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ. 2 I fed you with milk and not with solid food; for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able; 3 for you are still carnal.
— 1 Corinthians 3:1

carnal – meaning doing things that are of your flesh and body and not of the spirit.

You know if I ever become a dad or I babysit a baby. I gotta cut up their food into tiny bits and pieces so they can eat it. And it’s the same thing with you guys sometimes, it is my duty to feed you the Word of God in order for you to receive it more easily because you guys wont do it on your own.

And that’s the objective of a child. Is to learn how to feed yourself.

It is my hope that you will read your own bible, analyze what it means, and start applying it in your own life. And that is one of the signs of growing up.

Are you doing that? Are you reading your bible and receiving God’s Word and applying it in your life today?

And one of the problems we see in the church today who have known the Lord for years but have never grown up. When they should be feeding themselves and also feeding others, they still need their food cut up into little pieces for them and they still need everything done for them. Is that you. Are you a baby?

Jerusalem

by Michael Serna on Oct.25, 2011, under Devotion

Jerusalem became the capital of Israel under King David and was actually known as the City of David. It was there in Jerusalem that the first and the second temple were built. It was there in Jerusalem at Mount Moriah, which is the area we know now as the Temple Mount, that Abraham was willing to offer his son, Isaac, to the Lord.

Attitude Toward Others

by Michael Serna on Oct.13, 2011, under Devotion

3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but tin lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.
4 Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.
— Ephesians 2:3-4

Some people become so moody when they see someone perform better than them in something. Instead, we should look at them as inspiration or motivation to perform better. Don’t be conceited or selfish to anyone but admire their self-esteem (faith). You’d be surprised how much it can do for you.

Believers Who Are Caught Up

by Michael Serna on Oct.12, 2011, under Devotion

Paul in 1 Thessalonians 4:16–17 when he wrote,

For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, the Christians who have died will rise from their graves. Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will becaught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air . . . (emphasis added).

The context of Paul’s teaching on the rapture was a response to believers in Thessalonica whose friends and loved ones had died. They were concerned these friends and family members would never see the rapture. So Paul wanted to educate them. A few verses earlier he wrote, “And now, dear brothers and sisters, we want you to know what will happen to the believers who have died so you will not grieve like people who have no hope” (verse 13). Paul concluded his teaching on the rapture by saying, “So encourage each other with these words” (verse 18).

Here is the good news for anyone whose believing friends or loved ones have died. In the rapture, not only will you be reunited with your friends and loved ones who have gone on before you, but you will be in the presence of Jesus himself. Therefore, Paul says, you do not need to grieve as those who have no hope.
